Hi, I have been a fan of your art for some time now, you make some really good pieces! I was wondering whether you could give any tips on people like me, who want go improve on their art? I know you must get these types of questions a lot, so sorry!!
Hi there! Thank you so much for the message!
I find that it helps to sketch anything as much as possible - most importantly subjects in real life. For example, I would take a sketchbook outside and draw a tree. The subject may be boring, but it helps you to focus on the textures, colours, lighting and shadows as opposed to just the outlines that brings the tree into existence on paper. The key is to imagine the subject as a 3D model, not as a “2D picture” on paper. To make the tree more interesting and life-like to look at, try to add some characteristics to it. For example, make it appear more gnarly for a spooky effect, make it appear old and worn-out for an ancient effect or add extra swirls and exaggerate the bends of the branches for a cartoony-like effect. Adding these characteristics helps to bring more life and depth to your chosen subject.
I like to break the boundaries by studying subjects in video games or movies since it’s a lot more interesting to focus on, your creativity is only limited by your imagination and the results are pretty much the same.
I hope what I’ve written is somewhat helpful. Good luck!
